Omeprazole Capsules contains omeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It is used to treat acid reflux, heartburn and stomach ulcers.

How it works

It lowers the amount of acid your stomach makes by blocking the acid pumps in the stomach lining.

How to use it

Swallow the capsule or tablet whole with water, usually once a day before a meal. Do not crush or chew it. Always read the patient information leaflet before use.

Before you use it

Tell the prescriber if you have liver problems, take other medicines, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have difficulty swallowing, weight loss or vomiting.

Possible side effects

Common side effects include headache, stomach pain, diarrhoea, constipation, wind and feeling sick.

How long does it take to work?

It can take 2 to 3 days to feel the full effect, as it reduces acid rather than neutralising it.

Can I take it with antacids?

Yes, antacids and alginates can be used for quick relief while it starts to work. Leave a gap between them if the leaflet advises.

Can I stop taking it suddenly?

Speak to the prescriber first. Stopping suddenly after long term use can cause a short rebound in acid symptoms.

How should I store it?

Keep it in its original pack at room temperature, away from damp and direct heat, and out of the sight and reach of children.
