HIV prophylaxis means taking medicine to lower the risk of getting HIV. PrEP is taken before possible exposure, while PEP is an emergency treatment taken after possible exposure.

PrEP is available free from sexual health clinics in the UK, and privately after a consultation. PEP must be started as soon as possible, ideally within 24 hours and no later than 72 hours after exposure.
